Ulpan Or is a very well-known and respected name when it comes to Israeli Hebrew language instruction, especially among olim (“immigrants” to Israel). Rooted in a deep passion for the Hebrew language and Israeli culture, Ulpan Or’s Modern Hebrew course is designed not just to teach a language but to immerse students in a rich cultural tapestry. 

It wasn’t always smooth sailing. I found Ulpan Or’s offering highly confusing and at times overwhelming… but once you get past the “how” of its online Modern Hebrew courses, it does deliver the goods.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Course Structure and Content

Ulpan Or’s approach to course structure is both systematic and flexible. That mean’s there are  a lot of options on the table for both Modern Hebrew learners and learners with different learning styles, meaning everyone will find something they like. 

The Ulpan (“language learning program” in Hebrew) offers learners a solid range of online lessons, hybrid courses, or self-study. For the purposes of this review, I will be reviewing the online lessons, especially the GSH online hybrid course. 

GSH, if you were wondering, stands for Guided Speakable Hebrew. This hard-to-guess name is almost emblematic of Ulpan Or’s offering itself: pretty straightforward and explanatory once you unscramble what’s available, but otherwise confusing and potentially overwhelming.

Once I’d managed to navigate through the range of options for Modern Hebrew with Ulpan Or, I was pretty impressed to see that Ulpan Or’s approach to its course structure is both systematic and flexible. The GSH Course, which is a unique and innovative hybrid course that combines a range of synchronous and asynchronous learning formats. 

It breaks down into: 

• Personal video recorded lesson guidance.
• Interactive digital materials: Quizzes, exams, games, and other fun activities.
• Online assignments. Submit your answers using a video or audio recording or in writing.
• Interactive guided practice of new vocabulary – words and phrases.
• Daily Assignments – requires only 10 minutes a day.

I really like that there’s something for every type of learner presented in this course and although it is mostly self-study, it is structured, interactive, and provides feedback as well. There’s a nice blend of human teachers checking submitted assignments and providing feedback, as well as self-guided study and interactive learning.

The most exciting thing about the GSH Modern Hebrew course is that it truly allows you as a student to study at your convenience any time, anywhere. The course consists of 8-10 interactive video sessions and has a duration of 3 months.

One of the most important parts of this course is that learning spoken Modern Hebrew is placed front and center of the course, with heavy importance on video and audio recordings. That’s something I haven’t seen so much at other online Modern Hebrew courses on offer, and for me was something that I really appreciated as I believe that learning to speak a new language is the backbone of both learning and becoming proficient in it. I found it really helpful, especially when I had to submit recorded assignments speaking provided dialogue that was then checked and scored by my instructor.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Learning Methodology

Ulpan Or’s teaching methodology is a really interesting blend of innovative teaching practices as well as the more traditional instruction that you might recognize from other online language programs.

Going back to the GSH course, the use of synchronous and asynchronous learning formats really hits the spot for different types of learners, all with a solid focus on spoken Modern Hebrew. 

I really liked how there was a range of personal interaction, teacher guided feedback and interaction, self-study, passive and active study. The GSH course in particular was gamified and highly immersive, which definitely inspired me and encouraged me to keep on learning. After all, one of the hardest parts of any language learning program is pushing yourself to keep going, especially when times get tough. With Ulpan Or I felt that I wanted to keep learning as it was fun. I never found myself getting bored, as the blended learning approach meant that even though the curriculum was mostly digital, there were also physical workbooks for me to fill out, flashcards, board games, videos and more, which meant I always had a different activity to turn to and never felt burnt out.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Cost and Value for Money

Here’s the catch. Ulpan Or does not come cheap, and that’s perhaps a testament to just how innovative and effective the program is.

Take the GSH Course, for example. For the three month course, you’ll be paying $497. Still, that’s cheap compared to other courses offered by Ulpan Or, for which you could be looking at paying $2,100 (that’s for the online Hebrew Mastery Course, which runs for three months by semesters throughout the year). 

Courses offered by Ulpan Or are in the $500 range, which is actually pretty reasonable once you compare the cost of other language learning programs. However, it also seems a little unfair to shell out so much money for an online learning program, when other similarish courses can offer you a similar sort of experience, for far less money.

I was pleased to see that Ulpan Or has a few demo lessons online, however, the several times I tried to access them, the links were broken.

The same goes for Ulpan Or’s subscription offers. On the website I can see that there are subscription offers for paying by a monthly subscription, a four-month subscription, and a life-time subscription, however, these links were also broken, and I never heard these subscription plans referred to elsewhere on the site again.

I would say, if you’re interested in purchasing the Ulpan Or courses and can’t access the demo lessons, simply reach out to a member of staff, and they will happily send them to you from there you could decide if Ulpan Or’s approach is for you.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Instructor Quality

Since Ulpan Or works a little differently, it’s a little harder to rank the instructors’ quality in the program. Because you’ll have far less interaction with the instructors than you might have with other online language learning programs, I would be hesitant to give an overall impression of them.

What I will say is, every interaction I had with Ulpan Or’s instructors were pleasant, punctual, and constructive. This was mainly when I submitted my assignments and had to wait for feedback from native Israeli Hebrew instructors.

Another important thing for me to mention is, while at other online language learning programs, especially if they’re self-led like the GSH course at Ulpan Or, you’re more than likely going to the able to have some level of control over your instructor. While at Ulpan Or that’s not quite the case, and you’re simply assigned an instructor to teach you and give you feedback. That approach might fit some people, but for learners like me, I really prefer to have a personal connection with my instructor as well as some control over who I learned with. This is really a personal preference though, and this approach might really work for you as it clearly does for other students.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Unique Features

As mentioned above, Ulpan Or really stands out in the crowded language learning space with its unique offerings. The GSH Course is something so innovative, for taking the best bits of hybrid, online learning and putting it together with some of the most effective bits of self-led and interactive instruction.

The range of active and passive learning, fun, instructor-led activities and self-led learning really speaks to all the different sorts of learners and learning styles and keeps things engaging and fun and what could be a boring chore, a waste of money, and ultimately a language not learned as a result. 

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Flexibility and Accessibility

When I first considered diving into Ulpan Or’s Modern Hebrew course, my hectic schedule was a concern. Would I be able to fit in regular lessons? To my pleasant surprise, flexibility is one of Ulpan Or’s strong suits. The online platform allowed me to access lessons whenever and wherever I wanted. Whether I was on a business trip, waiting at an airport, or just lounging at home on a Saturday afternoon, my Hebrew lessons were just a click away. I could continue my Hebrew journey offline with no disruption in my learning pace. 

Ulpan Or has a student dashboard that is personalized according to your learning journey and whether you’re waiting for feedback from your instructor, or just want to keep going on your Hebrew learning journey, it’s very easy to navigate and learn Hebrew your way.

Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Student Interaction and Engagement

Depending on the program that you go with, Ulpan Or has a vibrant student community, as well as interactive lessons. On some programs, you might have group lessons, centered around specific themes or weekly topics. These sessions obviously rely on interactive discussions with other students, usually from around the world, and focus on collaborative learning.

Otherwise, Ulpan Or’s platform features discussion forums where students can share resources, seek clarifications, and engage in enriching discussions. One of the aspects I really enjoyed at Ulpan Or was the sense of community. 

Even though it was an online course, I never felt isolated. The interactive sessions, where students from different parts of the world came together, were enlightening. We shared our struggles, our little victories, and our love for the Hebrew language. The discussion forums became my go-to place for doubts, insights, and sometimes, just to share a funny Hebrew pun I came across. The instructors always encouraged interaction, often pairing us up for tandem exercises or group discussions. This collaborative approach not only enhanced my learning experience but also introduced me to diverse perspectives and cultures. Since learning modern Hebrew is not the easiest of tasks, this collaborative and interactive approach with my fellow students really helped my learning and my engagement.

The Bottom Line on Ulpan Or Modern Hebrew Course

I’ll be completely honest, I was initially put off by the confusing nature of Ulpan Or’s course offerings and prices. 

However, once I managed to unravel what was on offer, especially with the GSH course, I really enjoyed the holistic, immersive approach to learning Modern Hebrew. 

Not only were the innovative teaching methodologies a huge plus, but the higher price tag really forced me to begin my learning journey, and the fun approach to learning helped me to continue it. I guess you get what you pay for, but having said that, not everyone will be able to afford the hefty price tag.
